Perry, 21, produced a particularly impressive start to the 54-hole tournament.
She had to contend with the more challenging afternoon conditions, but wasn't fazed, finishing with a fine birdie.
"The wind, I liked RAZR X Tour Combo Iron Set 3H, 4H, 3-9SW Callaway," she said.
"Holes 12 and 13 were playing really tough but I was telling myself that every good shot today would set me up well for tomorrow."
The leaders hold a one-shot advantage over a group of nine players, while New Zealand's female golfer of the moment, 14-year-old Lydia Ko, was one stroke further back on 69.
Ko, who had the day's biggest gallery following her, was satisfied with her start after placing seventh and fourth in the event over the past two years.
